How to Start Exercising After Bariatric Surgery
Updated: Oct 17, 2019
Exercise is an imperative component of the equation and having recently undergone bariatric surgery is a critical time to get a sound exercise plan in place.
Exercise can help ensure that your bariatric surgery promotes long-term lifestyle changes and promotes positive well-being.
How do I begin?
Step 1:
Begin with regular walking. Initially commence with 10 mins daily and gradually increase when your body begins to manage the workload.
Step 2:
Contact an Accredited Exercise Physiologist to learn the best exercises for post-bariatric surgery.
Not only is exercise going to be beneficial post-bariatric surgery but it is also going to be beneficial for secondary injuries or medical conditions that you may have. Exercise also promotes a positive mood state, helps to improve sleep and energy levels.
Adequate nutrition and importantly hydration (especially water), is important after surgery and even more so if you are undertaking some exercise.
Post-surgery it is important to speak to your surgeon and an Accredited Practising Dietitian in regards to the new energy and nutrient needs of your body and in particular portion size as this is likely to have changed.
