Want to Start Eating Smarter? Here Are a Few Tips to Get You Started

Smart Eating Week is a chance to celebrate the variety of foods we have available and talk about how to make healthy choices to support our health.

Eating smart doesn't have to be complicated, in fact, often simple is best!

Want to start eating smarter? Here are a few tips to get you started:

Get into the habit of having breakfast

Having a regular breakfast gives us a nice burst of nutrients after not eating overnight and can support our energy levels for the rest of the day.

It can be hard to start having breakfast if you're not used to it so having a small, snack sized portion initially can help.

Choose whole foods

Minimal processing usually equals minimal additives and maximal nutrients.

Aim to have mostly whole fruit rather than fruit juice, whole grains rather than white varieties and other foods that closely resemble their natural form.

Experiment in the kitchen

What dishes do you like cooking?

How much time can you allocate to cooking a wholesome meal?

Cutting down on takeaway meals and spending some more time cooking home-cooked meals means we know exactly what is in our food.

Often we are more likely to make healthier choices too.

The Australian Healthy Food Guide is a great source of inspiration for healthy home-cooked meals.

Focus on fibre

Fibre not only supports our gut health, but fills us up and makes our meals more satisfying.

We find fibre in wholegrain breads and cereals, vegetables and fruits.

We should also ensure we are having enough water to get the maximum benefit from fibre and to keep our bowels regular.

Small steps save the day

Sometimes large goals can feel overwhelming and we will be more inclined to give up on them.

If you are making any changes to your eating, start with something small and work your way up.

That way, you can celebrate your success more often and boost your confidence to reach your next goal!
